AI Document Copilots

An AI document copilot is an assistant that works alongside a person on their documents rather than replacing the workflow around them: it answers questions about a file ("what's the notice period in this lease?"), summarizes a 300-page pack into the points that matter for the task at hand, compares versions and flags what changed, drafts responses grounded in the source material, and points to the exact passages behind every answer. The defining characteristic is interactivity under human control — the professional steers, the copilot accelerates.

Under the hood, copilots combine document parsing (so the content is faithfully structured, tables included), retrieval (so answers draw on the right passages of the right documents), and a language model that reasons and writes. Grounding is what separates a useful copilot from a liability: answers should cite their sources within the document, decline questions the documents don't answer, and never quietly blend memorized general knowledge into what looks like a statement about this contract.
