Claims Triage Automation

The emergency room model for claims — severity assessed at the door, so the right cases reach the right desks first.

Claims triage automation is the assessment of every incoming claim at the moment of arrival — severity, complexity, urgency, fraud risk — and its routing to the appropriate handling path: straight-through settlement for the simple and well-documented, standard adjuster queues for the routine, specialist teams for the complex (large loss, injury, litigation-prone), and investigation for the suspicious. Like hospital triage, the goal is not to resolve the case at the door but to make the single highest-leverage decision early: who should handle this, and how fast.

The assessment is largely a document-reading problem. The FNOL form, initial photos, police or incident reports, and early medical documents contain the triage signals: loss type and cause, injury indicators and severity language, damage descriptions, coverage red flags, inconsistencies between accounts, and the fraud markers (recency of policy inception, pattern-matched narratives, prior-claim history surfaced by entity resolution). Document AI extracts these into structured features; scoring models — typically trained on historical claims with known outcomes — estimate severity and complexity; and routing rules encode the operating model: authority levels, team specializations, regulatory timelines.

Triage quality compounds through the claim's whole life, which is why it repays automation. Early severity recognition means adequate reserves set from day one (a chronic industry pain point), injured claimants reached quickly, and large losses staffed before they escalate; early fraud detection is dramatically more effective than late; and correct complexity routing prevents the costly pattern of claims bouncing between desks. Because triage decisions shape treatment of claimants, programs monitor them for consistency and bias, keep the criteria explainable, and re-triage automatically as new documents change the picture — the claim that arrived looking simple and grew a litigation letter needs to move desks the day the letter arrives.
