Contract Obligation Tracking
The contract was signed, filed — and forgotten. Tracking turns its promises into dated, owned, monitored commitments.
Contract obligation tracking is the discipline of knowing — continuously, across every executed agreement — what the organization has promised and what it is owed: deliverables and their deadlines, payment and reporting duties, insurance and certification requirements, notice windows for renewal or termination, audit rights, SLA commitments, and the conditions that trigger any of them. The failure mode it prevents is mundane and expensive: the auto-renewal nobody cancelled, the contractual price increase never invoiced, the compliance certification that lapsed, the notice deadline missed by a week that locks in another year.
Document AI supplies the extraction layer that makes tracking feasible at portfolio scale. Obligations are buried in prose — scattered across clauses, phrased in legal variation, with dates defined relatively ("within 60 days of the Effective Date") and duties conditioned on events. Extraction identifies obligation-bearing language, classifies each duty by type and owner (who must perform: us or them), resolves dates against defined terms and executes the arithmetic, and structures the result into a monitored register: obligation, source clause citation, responsible party, due date, recurrence. Language models markedly improved the hard parts — conditional obligations, cross-references, and amendments that modify duties established in the base agreement.
The register is only as valuable as the operations around it: owners assigned inside the business (not just legal), alerts ahead of deadlines with escalation paths, evidence of performance attached as obligations complete, and amendment-aware maintenance so the tracked duties reflect the contract as currently amended, not as originally signed. Mature programs report on the portfolio — obligations at risk, counterparty performance patterns, renewal calendars by quarter — turning the contract repository from an archive of documents into a live map of commitments, each one traceable to the clause it came from.
Finding the indemnity in the haystack — locating and classifying the provisions that matter across a mountain of agreements.
From creation to defensible destruction — governing every stage a document lives through.
The Monday-morning summary that assembles itself — reports generated from what the documents actually say.
